Flagstone is a sedimentary stone that is split into thin layers and used for a variety of hardscaping purposes. It is a sandstone that contains some feldspar and quartz. These elements are naturally bound together with calcium, silica or iron oxide. Flagstone is not to be confused with slate, which is a metamorphic rock that is composed primarily of clay or volcanic rock. The beauty of flagstone is the irregularity of its shape and the variety of its color. Typical flagstone colors are red, blue, beige, pink and buff. There are other exotic colors as well. The wide availability, the variety of colors and the budget friendly price make it an excellent choice for patios, walkways and garden areas in the landscaping master plan.
